The process of detecting errors in a quantum error-correcting code without directly measuring (and destroying) the protected information.

Definition

Syndrome measurement is the technique used in quantum error correction to detect that an error has occurred — and what type — without directly measuring the logical qubit's actual protected quantum state, which would destroy the very superposition being protected.

Technical Definition

This is achieved by measuring specific combinations of ancilla qubits entangled with the data qubits in a way that reveals information about errors (the 'syndrome') while remaining uncorrelated with the encoded logical information itself, preserving it through the measurement process.
